All-girl Grade 7 Summer Program

The Real Me! Grade 7  All-Girl Summer Program

The Real Me is an all-female support program for girls in grade 7 going into grade 8. This time period and developmental stage for girls is vulnerable because they are moving into puberty, transitioning into adolescence and preparing for high school. Helping girls develop a healthy self-concept and self-esteem at this age will prepare them for personal challenges they will face as they move through this developmental stage. Historically, transitional stages for people any age is an inherently vulnerable time. Support at this age is key and that is what this support group can offer the participants. The group is based on the principles of empowerment and gives girls resources and support in their time of need.  The group blends psycho-education and a group counselling process to address gender-relevant and developmentally appropriate interventions for members.  The major goal for this group is to increase resiliency and functioning in individual, social, relational, educational and community-based contexts. Tara creates a safe, youth-friendly environment where girls can learn, grow and be themselves.

Facilitating girls groups is my passion and expertise and I have been doing it for 20 years in community-based settings as a Youth Worker. I have extensive training in this area and my article From Marginalization to Prioritization: Gender-Responsive Community-Based Programming for Adolescent Girls at Risk has recently been published in the international peer reviewed journal, Relational Child & Youth Care Practice in 2017.

If you and your tween are interested in joining the group a 60 minute screening pre-session for suitability and information gathering will be required before becoming a group member. If accepted, group members will attend an 7 session group 2 hours in length over the summer.
